Woodson Boys, West Springfield Girls Win 6A Team Titles

Nathan Atchue from Franklin County won the Virginia Class 6A boys title at Oatlands Plantation on Nov.  12, running 15:43 to edge out South County duo Isaac Garcia and Nayan Kasperowski

WT Woodson put five scorers beween 11th and 24th to win the 6A boys title with 57 points. 

West Springfield won the girls championship with 51 points. Aidan MacGrath (third), Kenza Elakari (fifth) and Adeline Barker (ninth) led the way for the Spartans. 

Gillian Bushee from Hernon ran to an impressive 28-second victory in the 6A girls race with a time of 18:17. Thais Rolly and her younger sister, Calypso, were second and 11th, respectively, for McLean. 

Glen Alllen edged Clover Hill, 53-57, to win the 5A boys meet. The two schools combined for seven of the top 14 finishers. Sophomore Brady Brennan from Brooke Point won it in 16:07. 

Deep Run scored 58 points to win a tight 5A girls race against Glen Allen (64) and Albemarle (71). Sophomore Elly Velasquez from Glen Allen won the race in 19:16.

Blacksburg swept the Class 4A titles and reasserted itself as perhaps the top overall program in the state. 

Connor Rutherford of Blackburg led the way for the boys with his individual victory in 15:46. The Bruins beat John Handley by seven points and Western Albemarle by 11. 

The Blacksburg girls prevailed over Atlee and Tuscarora with 101 points as nine points separated the three teams. Zoie Lamanna won the race in 18:44.

Abingdon swept the team victories in the Class 3A meet. Senior Makaleigh Jessee won the girls race in 18:21.0 and she had teammates behind her in eighth, Josie Jackson, and 11th, Amanda Ferrante

Abingdon's boys went 3-5-8-11 on the way to 65 points. Bazil Mathes from Monticello won the 3A boys race in 15:25.9. 

Freshman Kiera Lowman from Alleghany won the Class 2A girls individual title and helped her team collect a championship. Lowman ran 18:59.9 for the win and Allegany also put two more finishers in the top 10, Gracie Barron (ninth) and Macyn Cash (10th).

Mason Erchull from Floyd County won the 2A boys final in 16:33.8. Central (Wise) edged out Union, 93-97, for the team victory. 

Derek Mitchell led Lebanon to the Class 1A team title with his individual victory in 16:14.0.  

Jessi Looney of Grundy won a close race in the 1A girls final in 19:46.3. Carol-Anne Garrett of Galileo Magnet was second in 19:48.6.
